NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – A walker found the body of a woman Monday morning while walking the trails of the Croatan National Forest.

Deputies identified her as 34-year-old Amelia Betts. Investigators are trying to piece together a timeline.

When they arrived on the scene, Betts’ body was found on the ground near two pillars. She had multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators also found gunshot marks around the park.

Deputies think her death is an isolated incident. The park is operating as usual and investigators don’t believe there is any threat to the public.

They said the area is considered a safe place. The area is used for hiking horseback riding and just hanging out.

9 On Your Side spoke with a number of people who frequent the area and they said they’ve never heard of anything like this happening.
