ALAMEDA, CA (KRON) – A high school football player in Alameda died on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Alameda Unified School District.
Giovanni Pulido, a 15-year-old resident of Oakland, collapsed on the field during football preseason conditioning at around 6 p.m.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and took him to the hospital, where he died.
The football player was a student at Encinal High School.
The cause of death is not known.
Grievance counselors will be on-campus on Wednesday and likely throughout rest of week.
The principal has issued the following statement on Tuesday evening.
It is with a very heavy heart that I must inform you that one of our students passed away this evening following a medical emergency that occurred at the conclusion of football conditioning. Encinal staff worked diligently to provide medical attention, and 911 was called immediately. The student was taken to the hospital where he passed away.
This is a tragedy for his family and loved ones, as well as the entire Encinal Junior & Senior High School Community.
Grief counselors will be available on campus for students and staff tomorrow. We ask that you support each other, your students and this student’s family in this difficult time.
