Highway Patrol identifies Kinston woman killed in crash with train

An elderly woman is dead after a car collided with a train in Lenoir County, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Glynn Seymour Smith, 83, of Kinston died in the crash. 

Troopers were called to the scene around 11:30 a.m. to the railroad crossing on Highway 11 near Ferrell road.

Troopers said Smith’s car, a Toyota sedan, ran through the blinking stop arm before the collision.

It took the Hugo Fire Department 20 minutes to extract the woman’s body from the vehicle, which was forced underneath one of the train cars.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating why she went through the stop arm, and they are asking any witnesses to contact them at 252-522-1511.
