Highway Patrol investigates trooper-involved collision in Wayne County

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCT) – Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a trooper-involved collision in Goldsboro.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

Troopers with State Highway Patrol were responding to a reported call of person walking along Hood Swamp Road pointing  a weapon. Due to the nature of the call, troopers traveled onto the unopened portion of US70E bypass east of Wayne Memorial Drive in an attempt to intercept the person quicker.

As troopers approached the Hare Road overpass, they encountered a Barnhill Company contractor worker operating a 2006 New Holland TN60 tractor with a front broom sweeper. As the trooper approached the tractor, the two vehicles collided.

Both the trooper and the operator of the tractor were transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They were later released.

The operator of the tractor has been identified as Jimmy Reid, 53, of Tarboro.

The trooper has been identified as Trooper Reggie Edwards. Edwards is a 26-year veteran assigned to the Wayne County Highway Patrol Office.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into the collision.
