GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Weight loss and getting in shape are once again near the top of the list for New Years resolutions in 2016. However, finding the right trainer could be the difference between meeting your goal or not.

With numerous accreditation programs for personal trainers, there are several things you need to look out for. When choosing a trainer, you want someone with a national accreditation with some type of degree in exercise science.

“You can easily go on line and get a certification for $99 and Google all the answers,” said Jaclyn Francis, a trainer at Snap Fitness. “With ACSM, you have to go to a testing site.”

Francis said an accreditation like ACSM can put your mind at ease knowing your trainer is educated and knows how to keep you safe while working out.

One of the easiest ways you can get hurt while trying to lose weight is doing too much, too fast.

“They want to make up for lost time, and that really can’t be done,” said Missy Jacobson, coordinator for exercise programming at Vidant Wellness Center.

Hour long training sessions start at around $40, but get less expensive the more you buy.

When looking for a trainer, you want someone who is focused on you, who will help you meet your short and long term goals.

12-year-old Patrick Kennedy said one of his favorite parts about having a trainer is getting first hand demonstration.

“I think you should always have some sort of guide to help you, whether it be like a video or a picture of something,” he said.

Many gyms across the East are currently offering specials for the new year to attract more members.
