ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) – An infant is in serious condition after four people were shot in their vehicle while traveling east on U.S. Highway 64 early Sunday morning, Rocky Mount police said.

Three people, including the child, were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Pitt County. A total of four people – a woman, a boy, a girl and an infant – were injured in the shooting that police said occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m. on U.S. 64 near the Raleigh Street exit.

The names of the victims have not been released because the investigation is ongoing, police said.

A boy and girl are both in stable condition while an infant is in serious condition, officials said Sunday afternoon. The infant has improved after being in critical condition earlier on Sunday.

A woman hurt in the shooting is in fair condition.

A preliminary investigation has shown that the shooting was not a random incident.
