“They’ve worked their whole life to build their business,” said Joey Joyner, a local customer.
Jack Cobb and Son Barbecue Place have been making a name for itself for decades. Located on Main Street in Farmville, you can’t miss it. The painted pig murals aren’t the only thing that makes this place stand out.
“It’s the only place I know you can get barbeque turkey,” said Joyner.
It’s the southern soul food that has kept customers coming back since the 1940’s. From award-winning barbeque pork and chicken to its famous slaw and hushpuppies, owner Rudy Cobb has spent his life serving customers a hearty meal.
“We sell it in the car way back then and then in the early 60s we had a place on Walnut Street,” said Rudy Cobb, owner of Jack Cobb and Son Barbecue Place, “and then in 71 we got this place.”
Rudy took over the family business when his father jack passed away. Now Rudy says it’s time to close up shop.
“At this time I’m getting up there in age you know and its time,” said Cobb.
Rudy has decided to postpone the closing of the place until October 18th, as potential buyers look at it. He hopes future owners will continue its legacy of old fashion, pit cooking.
“I hope it would be the same,” said Cobb, “I’m supposed to train them how to cook the same.”
While retirement sounds relaxing, Rudy says he will miss coming to work every day.
“I’ll miss dealing with the customers and dealing with the people,” said Cobb, “I enjoy serving the people especially Farmville people”
Cobb’s is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday until October. As for the future of the tasty food, only time will tell.
