The Jacksonville Onslow Crime Stoppers held their 19th annual BBQ fundraiser Thursday morning.
The volunteer-based organization offers monetary rewards to callers who send anonymous tips for ongoing investigations.
Funds collected go towards promotional items, scholarships, and cash rewards.
Joe Yannessa, chairman of the organization says the support for Crime Stoppers has been growing.
“When we first started out our maximum reward was for $1,000. Years ago as we realized the community was supporting us more fund-wise, we were able to raise our maximum reward up to $2,500,“ said Yannessa.
The nonprofit makes an estimated budget every year on how much they expect to spend. But this fundraiser gives them the opportunity to offer more rewards.
“We will never is how many rewards. And it seems every year as more people support the program, we pay out more rewards,“ said Yannessa.
Last year, an estimated $20,000 was raised.
This is the only fundraiser of the year for the organization.
This year 2,000 meals were served.
