Jacksonville outlasts Swansboro in PKs to clinch state title berth


JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Sam Provencal scored the game-winning penalty kick as Jacksonville outlasted cross-county rival Swansboro to advance to the 3A State Championship.

The two were tied 3-3 after two overtime periods and two sudden-death periods to force penalty kicks.

Swansboro led 1-0 after halftime, but Jacksonville took a 2-1 lead when Madison Hoopes connected on a second-half go-ahead goal.

The Pirates would answer on a penalty kick, the second of regulation, to force overtime.

It’s the second consecutive year the two schools have met in the Eastern Finals and the second consecutive year the game has been decided on penalty kicks. Last year, Swansboro edged the Cardinals.MORE SCORES:
