Local group installs flag retirement box

A local group is now making it easier to properly dispose of worn national flags.

In Winterville, Tribe 56 of The Improved Order of the Red Men installed a dedicated box for citizens to leave old, tattered flags for proper retirement. The box is located at the Red Men’s building located on the corner of Railroad and Main Street. Flags of all sizes can be dropped in the box 24/7. The flags are then given to local Boy Scout troops to hold proper flag burning ceremonies.

Members of the group say they believe it is the only one of its kind in Pitt County.

“We became aware of the fact that some people were just taking their flags and throwing them in the trash cans to throw them away,” said Keen Lassiter, a member of The Improved Order of the Red Men Tribe 56, “and we knew that wasn’t the proper thing to do. New citizens would rather do something than throw their flags away.”

A similar box will be put in the town of Washington later this summer.
