Local law enforcement officers stress safety on Halloween

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Before kids hit the streets as little ghosts, goblins, and witches Monday night, local law enforcement officers have some reminders for everyone to keep the night full of treats and no tricks.

Local law enforcement officers say pedestrian safety is a top priority for all age groups. That’s why they’re blocking off several streets in Uptown Greenville to keep college students safe on Halloween.

Local authorities say it takes everyone in the community to keep younger kids safe trick-or-treating.

Drivers should watch for kids darting in the roads or in between parked cars and be especially careful in residential areas.

Parents should dress kids in light or bright colored, reflective clothing that’s not so big they can trip on it, and have them carry a flashlight. They also recommend planning a route ahead of time and checking the sex offender registry before going, which can be found by clicking here.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Doug Coley says the parent’s role is crucial.

“Regardless of the age, you need to monitor them. Staying on one side of the street, not crossing back and forth to cross the street to go to different houses, just one side of the street then come back down the other side would probably be best,” Trooper Coley said.

Local officers recommend taking kids to a central location like a trunk-or-treat rather than going door to door. That’s something Trooper Coley says they’re seeing more of these days.

“We’ve had some church groups and ems units that have reached out to us to get materials and the tins and interact with the children. So we are seeing that quite a bit,” Trooper Coley said.

Homeowners should clear their yards and porches of any tripping hazards or obstacles.
