GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - Officials confirmed that ECU's Alpha Phi Chapter is going to be suspended for three years after an investigation revealed that some members constituted hazing and violated the Student Code of Conduct.
East Carolina University worked with Alpha Phi International in the investigation.
On Thursday, ECU conducted a hearing and placed the following sanctions on the ECU Alpha Phi chapter:
• The chapter is suspended for three years and may apply to return to campus in May 2021.
• Upon an approved return to campus, the chapter will be placed on probation for two years and members of Alpha Phi must establish a plan for re-entry.
The university said they found that there were actions by members that constituted hazing, violations of the risk management policy, violations of university policies and violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
“ECU has been in constant communication with Alpha Phi International and we have been working collaboratively to investigate these issues,” said John Mountz, ECU Director of Greek Life. “We are saddened to have to suspend a chapter from our campus, but a significant part of being members of the Greek community is understanding the responsibility and accountability of actions taken.”
Any ECU investigations into individual behaviors will continue and are not impacted by this chapter suspension.
Another East Carolina University Greek life organization is in trouble. ECU officials confirm the school's Alpha Phi chapter was suspended by the Alpha Phi International group.
"ECU is aware of the decision by Alpha Phi International to suspend operations of their chapter at ECU pending the outcome of an on-going investigation by both Alpha Phi and the University," said John Mountz, director of Greek Life at ECU. "We support this decision and will work with the local chapter and international fraternity to move through this process and support the students involved with this chapter. Due to the on-going nature of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time."
There is no word yet on what is being investigated.
Alpha Phi is the latest Greek life organization suspended or removed entirely at ECU.
In February, ECU's chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was shut down. In April, ECU's Phi Kappa Tau fraternity was suspended after police found 2,500 xanax bars inside the fraternity house.
