Sheriff: Man who robbed pawn shop in stolen police uniform arrested

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - The man who the Pitt County Sheriff's Office said robbed a pawn shop and shot its owner while wearing a stolen police uniform was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Deputies, working with Greenville police, found Raekwon Ortiz Snipes at the Bellamy Apartments off County Home Road.

He was in the company of a female acquaintance, the Sheriff's Office said, and he was arrested without incident.

He is being booked at the Pitt County Detention Center.

Snipes is facing charges of:

  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury
  • Attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon
  • Impersonate law enforcement officer
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon

Deputies had spotted him driving a stolen car early Thursday morning in Greenville, near the Macgregor Downs Road area, but he got out of the car and ran away.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office initially responded to Jolly's Pawn Shop on 108 Pactolus Hwy around 2 p.m. Wednesday where they found the owner, Mark Foster, had been shot.

The Sheriff's Office identified Snipes as the shooter and said he was wearing a jacket and hat stolen from an Apex police officer during the shooting.

Apex police said an officer's personal vehicle was broken into at his Raleigh home on Jan. 14.

During that break-in, an Apex Police jacket and hat were stolen.

They also confirmed that the weapon used to shoot the pawn shop's owner was not the Apex officer's service or personal gun.

Foster was taken to Vidant Medical Center, and his condition is unknown.
