GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - The community is left searching for a new place to cool down this summer. A popular community pool in Greenville is closing.
Fitness Connection notified their members in March that they would be closing the pool.
Now members of the gym and the community are looking for answers as summer is just around the corner.
"They want to put up a parking lot in our paradise," said Susan Losurdo, parent and long-time gym member.
Susan Losurdo and her kids have been going to the pool for 10 years. She says the pool is popular not only to the kids and moms, but for summer camps and the elderly. That is why she has started a petition to keep the pool open.
"This is where all of the moms go, where all the families go,” said Losurdo, “and this is where we have our water aerobics. This is where summer happens."
Fitness Connection's corporate office said looking at membership rates only five percent had pool memberships and expanding the parking lot would be in the business's best interest.
Community members will have to find a new pool this summer.
"This is where my kids learned how to dive off a diving board and got brave enough to do the slide for the first summer," said Michelle Thorp, a parent and long-time pool member.
The pool has been a big attraction to the city of Greenville as it is the only one with a large twist slide and a zero level entrance. Community members say they will now have to resort to neighborhood pools that are more expensive or drive to the beach.
"We don't have the waterpark like Kinston,” said Thorp, “so it’s kind of hard because we feel like Greenville needs things like this to draw younger families together and have more of a community feel."
Fitness Connection's corporate office told me at this point the pool will not be open this summer as research continues to estimate the cost of renovating the area.
If you would like to sign the petition, you can do so here.
