Key milestone reached on Bonner Bridge replacement at Outer Banks

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WNCN) - Work is almost complete on the Bonner Bridge replacement project in the Outer Banks.

Dare County shared video Tuesday that shows recent construction on the bridge.

Officials say the bridge is now more than 90 percent complete.

However, they do say if you're driving on N.C. 12 in the area you can still expect some delays.

The bridge over the Oregon Inlet will be nearly three miles long once it's completed.

The new bridge will have a 100-year lifespan and will provide more options for boats to navigate under the bridge.

Despite being 90 percent complete, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said the project will not be complete until September 2019.

The $246 million project officials called the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, began in March 2016.
