NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) - Tourism season isn't just for the beaches, and places like New Bern are seeing a big boom this time of year.
The rooms at Captain's Stay Bed and Breakfast in New Bern are booked.
"Had a really busy season though,” said owner Craig Staton. “It's not just been this week. A lot of Europeans and then just all over the continental US, checking the town out, checking the water out."
9 On Your Side spoke with several visitors.
"I am from Sweden originally, but we have friends and family in Beaufort since my dad is half-American,” said Saga Atkisson, who was visiting from Sweden.
"I am dropping off my nephew,” said Cathy Connolly, whose nephew was visiting from California. “He came to visit for the Fourth of July from San Francisco. First time he has been out to this area."
"We live in Lexington now, but she is English, and I am from Virginia,” said Arthur Pegg, visiting from Kentucky. “We went to the ocean yesterday, played some miniature golf and just enjoyed the sunshine."
People around town said some people prefer staying in New Bern over the beaches because it is a less expensive option and just a drive or boat ride away."
"It's somewhat common,” said Jeremy McConnell, dockmaster with New Bern Grand Marina Yacht Club. “30- to 35-mile trip by water, so coming up with a boat, it's a nice easy ride to come up. This last week, we have had an unbelievable amount of boaters in for our marina, nearly 100 percent occupied, which we have about 245 slips."
Staton said while people enjoy their time on the water and shopping around town, he enjoys being the one to provide a room to come home to.
"I like for people to come and enjoy themselves, and I try to do everything I can for them to have a great stay here in New Bern,” said Staton.
