New program lets students enroll at community college, ECU at same time

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - For college students, transferring from a two-year community college to a four-year university can be overwhelming. So here in the East, ECU and 14 surrounding community colleges have partnered to make the process much easier.

"They complete their associates degree here at PCC whether its in the associates of arts, associates of science, associates in fine arts, associates in engineering, then upon completion of that and completing all other admission requirements to ECU they are guaranteed admissions to ECU." said Thomas Gould. Vice President, Academic Affairs, Pitt Community College.

Students will commit to a full-time status (a minimum of 12 semester hours) at PCC for a two years and then transfer immediately to ECU.

The Education Advisory Board predicts this method could save a student as much as $43,000.

"We do recognize students in the past have accumulated unnecessary credit hours which also lead to unnecessary debt," Gould said.

"Another advantage for student is completing one application when they finish their associates degree the community college and are ready to come to ECU. They do not have to complete another application process, they do not have to pay another application fee. They really are students at their home community college and ECU from the beginning," said Dr. Christopher Locklear, Vice Provost for Academic Success at ECU.

Students will also have access to ECU's libraries, scholarships opportunities, academic advisers, eligibility for an ECU One Card and Pirate Club membership and more.

"Well we have a lot of great pathways for students to realize their dreams, and I think this is just another for us to provide an opportunity to be successful," Locklear said.

Participating community colleges include Beaufort County Community College, Carteret Community College, College of the Albemarle, Craven Community College, Halifax Community College, Johnston Community College, Lenoir Community College, Martin Community College, Nash Community College, Pamlico Community College, Pitt Community College, Roanoke-Chowan Community College, Wayne Community College and Wilson Community College.
