Power out in Kinston, crews suspended due to wind gusts

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) - Electric crews in Kinston have suspended operations due to heavy wind gusts in the area.

There is an outage near the Lenoir County Courthouse.

Operations will continue to be suspended until gusts drop below 40 miles per hour.

Residents are being asked to stay inside their homes.

There is still room available at area shelters.

As of 6 p.m., Lenoir County officials said there are a combined 404 people in all three shelters.

They have room for at least 1,600.

The shelters are located at:

  • Lenoir Community College, 231 N.C. Hwy 58, Kinston
  • North Lenoir High School, 2400 Institute Road, La Grange
  • South Lenoir High School, 3355 Old Hwy 11, Deep Run

Some business owners along Queen Street sandbagged to protect against potential flooding.

As the rains continue to fall, Kinston police are asking drivers to stay off the roads.

Lenoir County does not have a curfew, and leaders do not anticipate enforcing one during the storm.
