LA GRANGE, N.C. (WNCT) - 9OYS spoke with students and teammates at North Lenoir High School following the deadly crash on NC 11 that killed one boy and sent the other to the hospital on Friday.
It happened just south of Grifton near Ferrell Rd on Friday. Rylee Miller, 15 was the passenger and died from his injuries. The driver, Kenneth Faulkner III, is at Vidant undergoing surgery, according to State Highway Patrol and friends at school.
9OYS spoke with friends of Rylee Miller and Kenneth Faulkner III on Saturday.
"It still feels unreal," said Chris Russell, a student at North Lenoir HS. "He [Miller] was just one of those kids that was always in a good mood. You would never catch him down in the dumps. If you were having a bad day and you needed somebody, you knew he was going to cheer you up -- just by joking around, being positive. He was that kid that was always joking around and was always having a good time no matter what he was doing."
Russell said him and Miller met in middle school and played baseball together. He said Miller played right field and pitched. He said he was good at it.
"I mean it still feels like yesterday we were in the dugout just talking, watching the game. It doesn't feel real," said Russell. "He always gave it 110% on the field, always it didn't matter if we were losing, 10 to nothing, you best believe he was going to go out there and give it all he had no matter what."
North Lenoir High School's football team decided not to attend the football jamboree at Ayden-Grifton HS on Friday to have time to grieve and pay respects.
State Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash and told 9OYS the two were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. State Highway Patrol will be testing to see if alcohol or drugs were a factor. Troopers confirm charges have been filed against Faulkner.
