Man charged with child abuse after drugs, firearm found near 11-month-old child

A man has been charged with child abuse after deputies said he was in possession of drugs and a firearm near an 11-month-old. 

Montrell Wilson, of Leland, was charged with:

  • Trafficking in cocaine by possession, transport, and manufacture
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver cocaine
  • Maintaining a place to keep controlled substances
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Misdemeanor Child Abuse

The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Wilson’s vehicle for a traffic violation on I-40 on December 28.

Deputies said they found 112 grams of powdered cocaine and a firearm.

Wilson is also a convicted felon, deputies said.

According to deputies, Wilson had an 11-month-old child in the vehicle with him at the moment of the incident.

Wilson was sent to the Duplin County Jail under a $250,000 bond.
