Man dies in Lenoir Co. flood waters; NC death toll at 20

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Another person has died in North Carolina due to flooding from Hurricane Matthew, this time in Lenoir County.

Gov. Pat McCrory made the announcement Wednesday afternoon during a news conference in Lumberton.

It happened Tuesday afternoon between 3 and 4 o’clock off of Hwy 55 on Neuse Road.

The victim was part of a group trying to rescue animals and he somehow he ended up underwater. Lenoir Co.officials elaborated on the incident saying the man was riding a horse attempting to round up cattle. EMS managed to revive him but he later died.

He’s not yet been identified.

It’s the first Hurricane Matthew-related fatality in Lenoir County. The death toll now stands at 20 in North Carolina.
