A man faces murder charges after a fatal shooting at Hostess House in Newport.

Newport police responded to a reported shooting at the Hostess House Extended Stay Motel located at 6741 US 70E at approximately 9:25 p.m. Saturday evening. 

Officers found a 35-year old white male had been shot when they arrived on the scene.

Paramedics attempted life saving measures on scene. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, James William Durner, 41, of the Hostess House, was taken into custody.

The victim has been identified as Casey Robert Orr, also of the Hostess House.

Durner and the victim were allegedly involved in a physical altercation leading up to the shooting.

Both the victim and the suspect knew each other and this appears to be an isolated incident, according to detectives.

Durner has been charged with an open count of murder and is currently being held without bail in the Carteret County Detention Center.

He is scheduled for a felony first appearance in Carteret County District Court on Monday, October 22, 2018.
