This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

Pitt County honored its telecommunicators Monday morning during a luncheon.

Organizers said it’s a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public.

Telecommunicators said they are thankful for the support and appreciation.

“People don’t realize what we do is, the information we take, we have to get it out fast, we don’t have time to think about it,” said Steve Cody, Shift Supervisor at Pitt County 911. You have to do it right now and you have to be right. You can’t be wrong.”

There is a talk at the federal and state level for telecommunicators to be classified as first responders.

As it stands now, their titles are administrative secretaries or assistants.
