Florida students disciplined for wearing ‘Mexican’ costumes on alien day

Florida Students Mexican Costumes Alien Day

The Pinellas County, Florida School District is investigating an incident where two Seminole High School students went to school dressed up as stereotypical “Mexicans” for “Extraterrestrial Day” last Thursday.

A picture of their costumes was posted on social media along with a poll question. It read, “Was it wrong of us to dress as Mexicans for extraterrestrial/alien day?” The answer options were, “Yes, are you dumb” or “No, that’s funny.”

A screenshot was posted on Twitter and quickly went viral.

Students claim the boys walked around the school with their costumes on for the majority of the school day. Parents and students called the office to complain.

A district spokesperson says the students were asked to remove the costumes when it was brought to the administration’s attention.

The district is not allowed to discuss any disciplinary action taken.

Pinellas County Schools released this statement to 8 On Your Side:

“Cultural insensitivity is not tolerated at Seminole High School. Unfortunately, two students exercised poor judgment and wore an outfit that was offensive. The choices of these students were disappointing and are not reflective of the Seminole High community. Pinellas County Schools will follow the Student Code of Conduct to address this issue.”
