Virginia police officer arrested on charges of rape and abduction

A Portsmouth, Virginia police officer was arrested early Tuesday morning on charges of rape and abduction.

The Portsmouth Police Department said in a news release that, on Monday, its Special Victims Unit learned of allegations that 27-year-old Officer Cleshaun A. Cox had acted inappropriately while on duty.

Cox, who has been with the department for just over one year, was arrested around 2 a.m. Tuesday and charged with one count each of rape and abduction.

Police said Cox has been turned over to the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
