House Republicans have decided to move forward with an updated bill on gun regulations that ultimately still would repeal North Carolina’s pistol permit application system run by local sheriffs.

The House Rules Committee prepared to meet Wednesday morning to discuss a new version of the legislation three weeks after it got pulled from the same committee after criticism.

The new version released late Tuesday would end the application system in 2021, rather than 2018 as the earlier version required. In the interim, there would also be new limits upon sheriffs in what they could ask applicants.

The bill would still allow doctors to ask patients on questionnaires about firearms they own, but they would have to make clear any answers are optional. The earlier version had prohibited such questions.
