GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Teachers in North Carolina may find it easier to pay back their student debt if House Bill 1031 is passed.

The bill would allow money from the State Lottery Windfall to go to public school teachers. They would be able to put the money towards their student loans. Qualified teachers would be able to receive up to $10,000.

To qualify, teachers would have to commit to teach in a North Carolina public school classroom for at least four years. Governor Pat Mccrory said the state needs to finds ways to recruit more teachers.

“The goal is to get more students to get into the teaching profession and decide that a pretty early age that this is what they want to do. we do that through training, pay and respect,” said Mccrory.

Mccrory’s budget adjustments for next year call for extra lottery revenues, to finance a digital learning initiative and fund classroom supplies.
