NCDOT crews plan to install two bar metal rails that will increase the height of the existing rail on the Emerald Isle Bridge. The new height will be four feet, four inches.
Officials say the improvements will add additional safety for bicyclists and pedestrians by providing fall protection.
The work is part of a preservation embodying the Emerald Isle bridge and the Atlantic Beach bridge.
Work on the two bar metal rails is expected to start after Labor Day weekend to avoid traffic during tourist season.
The project between the two bridges is expected to be completed by November 2020.
