NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – New Bern High School is the latest school to utilize a football strategy app developed by the U.S. Army
“The army started developing the Go Army Edge app about four or five years ago,” said 1st Sgt. Justin Arrant. “The app is like no other. It has the 3-D mapping, player precision movement. And what that does, it allows shareable content between the coaching staff.”
New Bern High School football coach Bobby Curlings said the app is helping his team learn the playbook.
“Instead of having to go out there and walk through it and try to explain to 11 different players what their assignment is and what their responsibility is, they’ll be able to look at it on the app and see exactly what they’re supposed to do,” said Curlings. “So when they come out to practice they should already have prior knowledge of it.”
Before plays happen on the field, they’ll be mapped out on the app.
“It comes up automatically as a 2-D white-board style with your X’s and O’s,” Arrant said. “Once it’s familiar you go into 3-D imaging. You can zoom in; you see it’s actually just like watching a video game.”
Coaches can upload playbooks or choose from some already on the app.
“It allows players to be more confident in who they’re picking up,” said Curling. “I think it’s changing the game.”
Nearly 200 schools across the nation are using the app right now, and you can download it for free on the Google or Apple app store.
