This school year is one of change for the Bertie County School District, including hiring a new Superintendent.
Dr. Catherine Edmonds took over in her new position this February after the previous Superintendent stepped down.
Being a previous educator, Dr. Edmonds believes in listening to students and what they think of their schools.
For the past few weeks, she has been going to every school in the district to have lunch with randomly selected students of all grades.
There, they discuss things from what they like about their schools as well as the things students wish could be improved on.
A majority of students say they really enjoy coming to school and give high praise to their teachers.
While one of the common issues is bullying and wanting to see more hands on learning, which she plans to tackle head on.
“I truly believe that students have to be a part of the process,” said Dr. Edmonds.
“They are the reason we are here every day, they are the reason we have schools open in the district and across the country, and they are the experts”
One goal Dr. Edmonds has for the summer is to start up a student council program for all of their schools.
She says by implementing a student government, they will be able to communicate to her directly more often with student issues.
