ORIENTAL, N.C. (WNCT) – Deputies in Pamlico County say a shooting Thursday happened after a man entered a store in an apparent rage and attempted to assault two store employees.
It happened around 1:22 p.m. at the Mack’s Mini Mart on Broad Street in Oriental.
Communications say the 911 call from one of the employees said that someone was trying to kill him and that a shooting had taken place. Moments later, they got another call that the shooting victim, Desmond Syrill Bryant of Oriental, had entered the store and attacked the clerk, had been shot, and then fled the scene on foot.
Deputies found that Bryant had fled on foot to a nearby residence, where he was located and found to have what appeared to be two gunshot wounds, one to the arm and one to the upper chest. He was taken by Pamlico County EMS and transferred to East Care, where he was flown to Vidant Medical Center. He’s currently listed in serious condition.
Witnesses told deputies that Bryant came into the store after banging on the front door several times. He then entered the store in an apparent rage and attempted to assault the two store employees. One of those employees retrieved a handgun from behind the counter and fired one shot, striking Bryant. That’s when Bryant fled the store.
No charges have been filed in the incident and the shooting remains under investigation.
According to online records, Bryant was released from prison on May 6 and was under parole for a separate issue. He’s been convicted of drug possession, speeding to elude arrest, assault with a deadly weapon, drunk and disorderly, as well as a hit and run.
