NEWTOWN, C.T. (WNCT) – In December of 2012, tragedy struck the town of Newtown, Connecticut when 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School by a lone gunman. 20 of those killed were young children.
Now, a brand new Sandy Hook school is open to the public. It sits on the same land as the old school, but doesn’t follow the same footprint.
The new school features state of the art security, including bullet proof glass, electronic doors and locks, cameras, and panic buttons throughout the building.
“There’s a lot of things that were well thought about in the school through a whole process that we incorporated into the school,” said Bob Mitchell, who was on the building committee. “It’s a comfortable place for an education. This is a school first.”
Mitchell said it was important for the school to look different from the old one, but also not like a prison.
Only 30 students who survived the 2012 shooting will attend the new school. Sandy Hook remains the 3rd deadliest shooting in U.S. history.
The first day of school for kids there is August 29.
