RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A North Carolina State Board of Elections employee has been placed on paid leave while the agency investigates a report the worker misrepresented state law at an event designed to teach people about voting.
The board said Wednesday it was conducting the review for comments the worker made at a public outreach meeting last week in Pasquotank County.
The conservative-leaning Civitas Institute released audio from the worker’s presentation in which she seems to tell the audience it’s OK to fill out a relative’s mail-in absentee ballot. But the state board says it’s unlawful for anyone to vote another person’s ballot and that a voter must request assistance, which must be given in person.
Board Executive Director Kim Strach says her agency is working to make sure what happened doesn’t again.
