Officials say a North Carolina prison inmate has died after setting a fire in his cell.
The N.C. Department of Public Safety says the inmate set the fire at Polk Correctional Institution in Butner around 3:30 p.m. Friday and was pronounced dead more than an hour later. The inmate’s identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The fire was confined to the cell and no other injuries were reported.
The department, local law enforcement and fire officials are investigating the incident.
