WINDSOR, N.C. (AP) — State officials say an employee was assaulted at the North Carolina prison where an officer was killed two years ago.
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says an inmate on Saturday assaulted the employee of Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor with a “handmade weapon.”
The agency says the employee was transported to a hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
Department spokeswoman Margaret Ekam would not describe the weapon used citing an ongoing investigation. The facility has been placed on an indefinite lockdown.
An inmate beat Sgt. Meggan Callahan to death with a fire extinguisher in 2017. Her father in a federal lawsuit accused the department of not addressing problems including chronic understaffing.
This summer, an inmate assaulted a sergeant and two officers at the same prison.
