Trooper shoots, kills driver fleeing traffic stop in Brunswick County

SHALLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say a North Carolina trooper shot and killed a driver who fled the scene of a traffic stop.
    
According to the State Highway Patrol, a car was pulled over Tuesday night in Brunswick County. The release says Trooper S.A. Collins fired as the vehicle accelerated toward him and fled the scene.
    
Brandon Webster, 28, of Shallotte succumbed to his injuries after arriving at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center nearby.
    
The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the probe, and the trooper has been placed on administrative duty.

Collins is assigned to Troop B, District 6 in Brunswick County and is a one-year veteran of the State Highway Patrol.
