VIDEO: Students from Wakefield Middle School in Wake County are caught on camera jumping out a Wake County School District bus window in Raleigh on May 22.
A parent, who wished to remain anonymous, shared the video with CBS 17.
The news about what happened on the bus spread quickly on social media.
One parent wrote, “Kids from WakefieldMS all jumped out of the bus.”
A second parent added, “I have never seen an adult lose control over a large group of kids and put them in so much danger. Kids are jumping from the back of the bus, dodging car.”
The Wake County School District confirmed the incident in a statement.
“We are aware of an incident on Wakefield Run 10 where multiple students did not follow these rules. In doing so, these students risked the safety of all the students on the bus. School and district staff are investigating the incident. Student discipline will be administered where appropriate,” the statement said.
Students jumped out of bus windows and through the emergency exit on the back of the school bus. No one was hurt, but the school district said safety is a top priority.
“Student safety is our top priority. Bus transportation is an extension of the school day, and the same student behavior standards that apply in the classroom also apply on the bus and at the bus stop,” the statement said.
It continued: “Every year, students receive instruction in safe bus riding procedures. Students are expected to stay seated until time to get off the bus. Students are not allowed to throw items on the bus. Students should only exit the bus through the front door unless in an emergency.”
The statement also said the school district appreciates the work of the bus driver to manage the situation.
The school’s principal rode the school bus the day after the incident.
Parents told CBS 17 they believe the school district is handling the situation.
