North Pitt girls take home 2A State Championship, 68-65 over East Davidson


CHAPEL HILL (WNCT) – North Pitt’s TyQuishia Gainer’s steal and layup with 6.8 seconds to play was the difference as the Panthers beat East Davidson 68-65 for the school’s second NCHSAA state title.

North Pitt completed the year with a near-perfect 30-1 record that included a controversial brawl and the suspension of their head coach Neal Carr.

The Panther players gathered around their coach after the trophy presentation was complete.

“All it did was brought us together even more,” interim coach Yolanda Bowden told the media afterwards.

Three North Pitt players were honored after the victory. Nyjanique Langley as named the Championship MVP after scoring 20 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Dorian Sharp was the Most Outstanding Player after scoring 21 points with 14 rebounds.
North Pitt’s Sarah Searcy was the recipient of her team’s NCHSAA sportsmanship award.
