NEW DETAILS:

Onslow County Animal Services shelter said since Wednesday, they have seen an increase in pet adoptions and foster homes for animals.

They still are overcrowded and at full capacity, so any animals being brought in for surrender are still at risk for euthanasia.

Shelter Manager, Rachel Conklin, said the summer months are more prone to being overcrowded due to an increase in animals in the area.

She mentioned that they do have some animals that have their adoption fees paid for by sponsors, so if you’re looking for an animal this weekend make sure to check out the Onslow County Animal Services shelter.

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C.- (WNCT) If you’re looking for a new furry four-legged friend, check out the Onslow County Animal Services shelter first.

The shelter is currently past capacity with 136 dogs housed in 106 kennels.

They also have approximately 180 cats that need forever homes as well.

Shelter staff say they typically see an influx of animals during the summer season due to puppies and kittens coming in.

A spokeswoman for the shelter said that due to limited numbers of resources, if you must surrender your pet they could be at risk for being put down.

“Unfortunately euthanasia at a county facility is still a reality here. So we like to encourage people that if they can find an alternate solution use that first and use us as a last resort,” said Rachel Conklin, a spokeswoman for the Onslow County Animal Services.

She also mentioned they can offer resources as to those alternative solutions such as helping you supply food for your animal or posting on social media sites.

Shelter staff encourage you to spay or neuter your animals to prevent an unwanted litter.
