(WNCT) – Joint campaigns in North Carolina netted over 1,700 arrests of drunk driving suspects, according the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
State and local law enforcement cracked down on driving violations during “Operation Firecracker” that ran from June 26 through July 5.
It is part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s July Fourth holiday “Booze It & Lose It” campaign.
During it, agencies issued nearly 64,000 traffic and criminal violations.
“The Fourth of July is a time we celebrate our nation’s birth and the freedoms we enjoy daily,” said Don Nail, director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “I applaud the efforts of our state and local law enforcement officers for the number of impaired drivers they removed from our roads during the holiday, allowing our citizens to be free from the dangers those who chose to drink and drive present.”
No counties in Eastern North Carolina made the top five for DWI arrests.
The state says the list included Wake County, Robeson County, Mecklenburg County, Guilford County and Cumberland County.
