Parents’ health influences children’s health

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – According to a new report by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine and NC Child, in order to improve the health of North Carolina, parents need to improve their own health.

One local doctor says parents’ positive actions can influence a child.

“A great time to practice positive dietary behaviors, a great time to get out and be active with your family,” said Dr. Virginia Stage of the College of Allied Health Sciences at ECU. “Having young children, you actually get to choose a lot about what they’re eating as well as where their eating.”

The report says 17 percent of all parents in the state, about 324,000 people, lack health insurance, which can negatively affect their children.

North Carolina scores poorly in school health, weight, physical activity, tobacco use, mental health, and alcohol and substance use.
