GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Parents learned more about how to keep their kids health, happy and safe at a maternity fair at the Greenville Convention Center Sunday.

First-time parents and parents who already have kids say they’re feeling a less stressed after learning more about what resources are available for them.

Andrea Kelly said, “I’m learning more about the WIC program, great community resource and I’m learning more about child care options.”

From child care to healthcare to education, it’s all about creating a solid foundation for children.

“Right now, in Pitt County only half of children entering kindergarten are entering children without the skills they need to succeed,” said United Way of Pitt County Jessie Beachman. She said it’s important to constantly read to your children, even if they are babies. “We only use about 300 words in daily vocabulary, so when you are reading you find those words that you wouldn’t typically use and it’s filling your baby’s brain with those words.”

Parents say they didn’t know reading was that important or cleaning your baby’s mouth after feeding them. One parent to be said some things surprised her, like when a dentist told her babies need to be seen at a young age.

“She says as soon as they get their first teeth or before that. I think that’s good to know because parents take them when they are like two and three,” Paulette Johnson said.

Parents say they’ve learned that there’s thousands of options are out there and they aren’t alone when raising a child. Vidant Medical Center also checked car seats for correct installation. If you want to make sure your child seat is installed properly, you visit any fire station in the area.
