CHARLOTTE – Jordan Williams tallied a team-high two tackles for loss (-5 yards), while Darius Commissiong registered the lone sack of the day (-7 yards) highlighting East Carolina’s defense Saturday afternoon in an abbreviated scrimmage at Rocky River High School.

The Pirate defense, which allowed nearly 800 yards of total offense in their first scrimmage of fall camp, held the offensive unit scoreless on their first eight possessions before yielding three touchdowns in the final four drives. Dayon Pratt (-2 yards) and Nhyre Quinerly (-3 yards) added tackles for loss to help spearhead a unit that allowed only 193 passing yards.

“The defense came out with a whole lot of energy and intensity, which is something we have been waiting on,” first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery said. “They have been hearing some things from the coaches on how they played in the first scrimmage and it was good to see them respond the way they did. We did give up two scores on drives that started inside the 40 and 21-yard line, but overall I liked what I saw.”

Philip Nelson and Gardner Minshew took turns running the Pirates’ offense completing a combined 11 of 22 passes and a pair of scores. After the defense held the offensive group scoreless in the first half of the contest, Nelson (5-of-8 for 53 yards) hooked up Quay Johnson on a 30-yard strike for the first score of the afternoon. Minshew guided the second unit completing 6 of 14 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown that went to Deondre Farrier for 12 yards.

“Offensively we struggled a bit early on,” Montgomery added. “It seemed that when we had the ball in our own territory we couldn’t get anything going, but once we crossed midfield we were able to punch the ball into the endzone. Good teams have to be consistent all the time and can’t have false starts or foolish penalties. We have a couple weeks to clean that up before we kick off the season against Western Carolina.”

Saturday’s practice, the 19th and final of fall camp, consisted of a 10-minute flex period and 25 minutes of individual group drills before moving into the 50-play scrimmage.OTHER SCRIMMAGE HIGHLIGHTS
