GREENVILLE (WNCT) –  East Carolina continued its preseason camp progression Tuesday by completing its first two-a-day under the direction of first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex. The Pirates spent just over two hours wearing full pads for the first time during the morning workout before returning in the afternoon for a one-hour session in shells.

“Offensively we showed that we can run the ball a little bit during the morning practice,” Montgomery said. “Our whole backfield has been impressive so far especially Derrell (Scott), Anthony (Scott) and Devin (Anderson), who are running the ball well and with confidence. Our offensive line is starting to gel right now whether it’s the run game or in pass protection. We just have to make sure to continue to find the pieces that work together on the offensive unit. Defensively we were flying around to the ball, which we have seen a lot of early on in camp.”

ECU, which has three more double practice days remaining, opened the actin with a 12-minute flex and special teams period before moving into 18 minutes of individual group work. During these sessions, the Pirate offensive and defensive lines worked on pass rush, run blocking and gap assignments, while the skill positions continued route-running efficiency against the defensive backs.

The first of two 12-minute team sessions focused on the running game and first-and-10 situations, which was followed by 15 minutes of group work. While the skills were working on routes vs. air against the secondary unit, the linebacking corps concentrated on pass drops and the defensive line worked on double-teams, power scoops and stunt drills.

Prior to the final team period, the offensive line went through a five-minute segment against the defensive front seven in a blitz pick-up drill, which was followed by a 7-on-7 stanza focusing on third downs. The morning ended with five minutes of conditioning with strength coach Jeff Connors and his staff.

The afternoon practice was used for continued individual group development, special teams work and team situations such as first-and-10, third-and-8, redzone and goal line.
