Plymouth holds off Robbinsville, 28-20, to win 1A State Championship


WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – Chris Kelly ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns to help Plymouth beat Robbinsville 28-20 in Saturday’s Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Kelly was named the most valuable player for the Vikings (14-2), who were in a fourth straight state final. Plymouth, the top seeded team in the 1-A East bracket, had lost its last two title games but won its third championship.

Chad Dance added 113 yards rushing and a 54-yard touchdown run to start a 21-0 opening burst.

Lane Millsaps ran for 132 yards while Colby Hemphill had two rushing scores for the Black Knights (12-3), who trailed 28-8 before getting two touchdowns in the final six minutes.

Robbinsville forced a punt with a chance to tie the game, but lost a fumble on the return with 1:21 remaining.
