Prescribed burn planned for today on Croatan National Forest

The Croatan National Forest is planning a 78-acre prescribed burn on Tuesday off Nine Mile Road and Deep Sand Road, 1 mile north of the community of Broad Creek.

Authorities said the public should be aware of potential smoke in the area along with firefighter traffic, including a helicopter.

The goal of the prescribed burn is to reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires and improve wildlife habitat, authorities said.

The burn will also help to restore the longleaf pine and wiregrass ecosystem.
