The Red Cross gave back Wednesday in honor of a retired Pitt County Schools teacher.
Tom Barrington needed emergency surgery last Thursday for a blood vessel tear near his heart.
The blood drive Wednesday is in honor of Barrington and to help those in need of blood donations.
The Red Cross said blood donations are lower during the holidays.
Barrington’s family said they are thankful for all the help from the community.
“It’s just been wonderful,” said Debra Barrington, Tom’s wife. “To start the year 2019 off like this and giving back, it’s just such a rewarding feeling because then you know you’re really loved.”
The Red Cross has already reached their goal for Barrington, but you can still donate for others in need.
The blood drive is at Friends in Fellowship Christian Church in Winterville and ends at 7 p.m.
