OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WNCT) – Investigators say a man swimming off Ocracoke Island drowns after being pulled under by a rip current.
It happened just before 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon near ramp 70.
The Outer Banks Group says a 67-year-old man was swimming with another man about 60 yards out. Emergency crews say the two were discussing the current, when it took the man.
The other swimmer was able to swim to shore and call for help.
Chief Ranger of the Outer Banks Group, Daniel Vandzura, says his thoughts are with the family of the victim.
The identity of the victim has not been released, since emergency crews are still trying to notify his family.
