The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of an inmate in the Duplin County Jail.

Officials at the jail tell 9 On Your Side that inmate 36-year-old Anthony Ray Baker was found hanging unconscious in the shower of his jail cell by another inmate around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Jailers performed CPR and called Duplin County EMS, but Baker was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Blake Wallace requested the SBI investigate the incident, which is common practice. They’ll present their findings to District Attorney Ernie Lee at the completion of their investigation.  

Baker was booked into the Duplin County Jail Thursday, May 14th on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession and distribution methamphetamine precursor and resisting a public officer. He was given a bond of $135,600 at the time of his arrest.
