GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The U.S. Army recruitment office in Greenville urges people to be on the lookout for a possible text message scam.

SFC Robert Meola said he’s received calls from some people saying they received a text message from an unknown number claiming they’re a “Staff Sergeant in the Army.”

It goes on to say they’re deployed to Afghanistan and to respond through e-mail.

It’s unclear whether the individual wants money or is attempting to gain personal information.

SFC Meola said it’s likely a scam as U.S. military personnel wouldn’t use text messaging to reach out.

“It’s cowardly, shameful to go ahead and take advantage of everybody’s trust that they have, thinking that someone in the military might be in trouble,” SFC Meola said.

He said if people receive the text message, they should contact their local law enforcement agency.
